YMCA To receive $6m redevelopment funding

YMCA of Hobart is overwhelmed by the announcement this morning by Independent for Clark, Andrew Wilkie that the federal government will be providing $6 million for the redevelopment and transformation of YMCA Glenorchy.

In a statement released by Mr Wilkie, a long term supporter of the YMCA, this morning he said, “I’m delighted that the Federal Government will contribute $6 million to fully fund this once-in-a-generation upgrade of the Glenorchy YMCA,” Mr Wilkie said. “This is a game-changer for the northern suburbs.”

“The YMCA is already a fantastic asset for the city of Glenorchy. This grant will allow the YMCA to reach its full potential through the addition of over 300 square metres of community sporting and recreation infrastructure.”

The CEO of YMCA of Hobart, Melissa Carlton, in thanking Mr Wilkie and the Federal Government said that the Y has been serving this community for over 130 years and the funding will provide better facilities for our current users as well as providing a range of new community facilities.  We already provide a range of affordable programs to improve the health and well-being of our community and the funding will enable the Y to reach more people and have an even greater positive impact in the community.

The project will be completed in three stages;

Stage 1 of the project will include an indoor skate park, an open-plan indoor sports arena with an international standard 3×3 basketball court, upgrades to change rooms and the raising of the floor in the community gym to create a single level, access-friendly wellbeing centre.  Stage 2 will see the construction of a double height, glass-fronted reception and community café, as well as a social enterprise commercial kitchen.  Stage 3 will include three community classroom and meeting spaces, and spectator viewing platforms for the community skate park and multi-purpose sports court.
