Project Y Glenorchy – Redevelopment
A central place for the community to find out about the progress of the planned redevelopment of Glenorchy YMCA…
20th September 2019 update:
Milestone 1 has been completed! YMCA of Hobart has today submitted the required documents in the “request for information” stage of grant process. A big thank you to the YMCA internal project team who have been working hard over the last few months on the collating and preparing the project information for the Federal Government. Very exciting to see it all starting to take shape.
30th July 2019 update:
Over 2 years ago we began a project to apply for and attract state and federal government to redevelop and transform YMCA Glenorchy. The renovated area and new building would house a social enterprise cafe and kitchen, office space and a new toddler play space. The proposal also included large amounts of expenditure allocated for removing some older building infrastructure, creating new change room facilities, rejuvenating program spaces. The project also includes funds for the design and construction of a skills based indoor skate park facility in a part of the existing building.
Early this year, Andrew Wilkie and Eric Abetz announced that the YMCA would receive $6 grant to cover a proposed redevelopment. After further consultation with industry professionals, it became clear that a larger scale Skate Park should be considered if possible. With the majority of the $6m funding already allocated, the YMCA started seeking additional funding to enable us to increase the size of the planned Indoor Skate Park.
Recently, the Glenorchy City Council proposed providing the YMCA with a grant of $250k from DHHS (State Government), originally set aside for a new outdoor skate park in the CBD. Community feedback indicated that the use of these funds would not adequately satisfy the grant deed and public needs of the Skate Park Community so the offer of additional funds was withdrawn. Although, this means the YMCA doesn’t currently have the funds for a larger indoor skate park, we are very excited to continue supporting the community in support of a new public outdoor skate park (as we have done for the past 3 years). We are also actively applying for other funds to help deliver a larger indoor skate park.
At this point, we are still working on finalising the $6m funding deed. This was delayed due to Federal Government Caretaker mode but we are moving forward! Once the we have final sign off we’ll begin the formal planning and tender process for stage 1 of the development. This includes comprehensive community involvement and consultation on the final designs.
All going well, we anticipate the redevelopment to commence in the second half of 2020.
June 2019 Update:
Project Y Redevelopment
In February this year it was announced that YCMA will be receiving a federal grant for up to $6 million for the redevelopment and transformation of YMCA Glenorchy. This is great news, as our building is in much need of an upgrade. We are humbled to be recognised by the federal government and local politicians for our contribution to the community.
As we eagerly await the funding deed from our new Federal Government, once received, we will be working hard on community consultation, design work, tenders and application processes. We anticipate development will commence in the second half of 2020.
Changes in the lead up to the 2020 redevelopment – Towards our new Y!
During June 2019 (prior to the future redevelopment) we are changing the floor plan of YMCA Glenorchy which will improve the layout and operations of Y-Fitness and provide a new dedicated Café and Toddler programs space. This will provide an amazing community hub for kids, parents, members and guests to get together, enjoy a coffee and be a part of everything the YMCA has to offer. These changes will also free up the middle basketball court for additional programs until the redevelopment commences.
The changes will include…
- Creating a welcoming café space in the foyer area for members and guests.
- Relocating the group exercise room to a larger space.
- Moving our cardio and fitness equipment to the current group exercise room.
- Retiring some older equipment
- Relocating the toddler play/program space
We are excited about these changes and look forward to rolling out our new improved floorplan which lead us towards the redevelopment.
If you have any suggestions that may assist us, please let us know at reception or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org We value your input and hope to work together to create a safe, welcoming community hub for everyone.
