The YMCA Youth Parliament of Tasmania for 2015 was a huge success, with young people from across the state converging on Hobart to learn about, and debate in the Parliament of Tasmania’s House of Assembly. The Youth Taskforce is a dedicated group of volunteers under the age of 25, who organise the event and who have worked tirelessly over the last 9 months to ensure a seamless and successful event for everyone. Youth participants between the ages of 16 and 18 form a nominal Government and Opposition. They then create small teams, write their own Bills, and then debate issues which they consider important. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to have their voices heard on a range of issues of importance to them.
Youth Parliament is run by YMCA’s nationally, and is integral to our work to empower and engage young people in our community. At the YMCA we are committed to youth participation and providing opportunities for young people to learn about themselves and develop leadership skills for life. We believe it is important that young people have the opportunity to meaningfully engage in decision making processes.
We are already planning for the YMCA Youth Parliament of Tasmania 2016! It’s important that young people from all areas of our community have the opportunity to be involved in such a valuable event.
